Memorial Day Weekend Update

SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif., 26 May 2023 –

Hi there, neighbors!

Memorial Day weekend is here, with quite a different kick-off than usual, given that a couple of our visitor’s favorite areas are closed. We are unsure what visitation will look like this weekend, but we are staffed up and ready.

For awareness, yesterday we heard that Caltrans was planning to reopen Route 245 today at noon. Given that, we’ve updated the map from Sequoia to Kings Canyon for giant sequoia access, please see attached.

A few updates from this week’s check-in on reopening dates.

Grant Grove

  • Some delays in campground openings
    • Azalea to open fully on 6/9
    • Sunset estimated open 6/16
    • Crystal Springs estimated open 6/23

Lodgepole/Giant Forest

  • On target to open to the public on Friday, June 2!
  • Lodgepole Campground
    • Loops A, B, and maybe C are estimated to open 6/9
    • Upper loops rough estimate open of 6/23, will see how melting out goes.
  • Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road could open to vehicles, but at least to pedestrian access on 6/2
  • Wuksachi Lodge, gift shop, and food service will open on 6/2
  • Giant Forest Museum will open 6/2
    • Wilderness permit station will be here until LPVC opens
  • Lodgepole Market is on target to open 7/1
  • Lodgepole Visitor Center is on target to open early July
  • Dorst Campground is still TBD for the season, campground reservations will be cancelled through 7/28.

Have a good holiday weekend!
