Highway 198 Culvert Work To Continue Another Month
Expect 10 Minute Delays In Up To Two Locations
According to Christian Lukens, Caltrans District 6 Information Officer, work on the Highway 198 culvert rehabilitation project from the Sequoia National Park boundary down past Lake Kaweah is expected continue at least until the middle of December. At that time, if weather allows, the crew expects to be below Lake Kaweah. The crew has been completing one to two culverts per work day.
Road closures are typically in place from 6:30am to 4:30pm (though they could go as late as 6pm if necessary). The maximum number of simultaneous closures each day is two, with no more than 10 minute delays for each closure.
NOTE: Due to the work also being conducted by Browns Construction and SCE in the area, there may be additional closures.
Background: Rehabilitating drainage culverts is essential for this segment along State Route 198 to avoid possible future flooding damage and the resulting pavement failure caused by blocked and defective culverts. Maintaining culverts is necessary for the stability and proper functioning of the roadway. These culverts have reached or exceeded their design life. They are perforated, heavily rusted, and have damaged end sections and separated joints. Repairing and replacing the culverts is necessary to maintain the highway in good operating condition.
