Three Rivers residents woke up this morning to a bit of smoke from the fires to the north. This is a reminder, if any of us needed one, that fire season has begun. With the Fourth of July celebrations only a week away, the risk of fire in our community is substantial.

Fireworks spark fires. Every year in California, serious injuries and millions of dollars in property damage occur from wildfires sparked by fireworks. This year’s dense grass growth and dry vegetation increase the threat for devastating fires.

Fireworks are illegalAll fireworks, including Safe and Sane Fireworks, are illegal in Three Rivers and the area around our community, including the BLM lands (e.g., the Salt Creek and Case Mountain area) and Sequoia National Park.

A Cal Fire representative has notified us that the fireworks prohibition in Three Rivers will be enforcedIt is illegal to possess or use any fireworks, including Safe and Sane Fireworks, in Three Rivers. Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks. If convicted, a violator could be fined up to $50,000, be sent to jail for up to one year, or both.

The community needs your help. The news media and social media have been spreading misleading and false information about the legality of Safe and Sane Fireworks in most of Tulare County. As a result, residents and visitors may believe that Safe and Sane Fireworks are legal in Three Rivers. Please spread the word that all fireworks, of any sort, are dangerous and therefore illegal in Three Rivers and the surrounding area, including the BLM lands and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. If you own or manage hospitality services, including short term rentals, please inform your guests that fireworks of any sort are strictly prohibited.
