The road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is closed for emergency road repair. A sink hole near Stoney Creek in the Sequoia National Forest has become visible in one lane of traffic on the Generals Highway and there is undermined roadway across both lanes. The hole is near a roadway area that was severely damaged during winter storms in 2023. Crews will attempt to make repairs tonight, but it is unclear whether the road will be reopened by tomorrow. In the past week alone, two swift water rescues have already occurred at the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks entered stage 1 fire restrictions at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024. Stage 1 fire restrictions prohibit wood and charcoal fires, including wood burning stoves, at elevations of 3,000 feet and below. Firefighters plan to begin ignitions on the 2024 Ash Mountain Prescribed Burn in the foothills of Sequoia National Park on Sunday, June 2. Two days of ignitions are planned. This project consists of 19 acres of broadcast prescribed burning and an additional 20 acres of non-fire fuels reduction. Smoke impacts are expected to be localized and relatively brief. Memorial Day weekend is considered the summer “kick-off” for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and the parks are expected to be exceptionally busy. Mineral King Road remains closed to the public. Cabin owners and authorized individuals may use the road; however, construction beginning on Wednesday, May 15th is expected to result in road closures and 30-minute construction delays until end of June. Click on title for details.

Beginning the week of April 29 visitors to Sequoia National Park can expect weekday, daytime closures, and delays for an estimated 4-week period between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest area. The contractor will be mobilizing and preparing the site early in the week and visitors can expect periodic traffic delays. Scheduled closures are expected to begin Wednesday, May 1. Tentatively beginning the week of April 15 visitors to Sequoia National Park can expect weekday, daytime closures, and delays for an estimated 4-week period between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest area. Tentatively beginning April 15 through about May 10 significant weekday, daytime closures will go into effect between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest Museum. Similar road construction will be taking place along the Mineral King Road. Current estimate is for work to begin in late April and take about 8 weeks to complete. Road closures with scheduled pass throughs for residents will be in effect until the Memorial Day weekend, when access typically reopens for the season to public vehicles. SEKI is planning to close the Generals Hwy at Hospital Rock Friday evening, 3/1. If the forecast is accurate, it is likely to remain closed through the weekend, especially given how low the snowline may be.
