On April 1st, County Supervisor Eddie Valero attended the public meeting held by Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. In response to an audience question about the Mineral King Road, he read an update provided by the county’s Resource Management Agency. Tentatively beginning April 15 through about May 10 significant weekday, daytime closures will go into effect between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest Museum. Similar road construction will be taking place along the Mineral King Road. Current estimate is for work to begin in late April and take about 8 weeks to complete. Road closures with scheduled pass throughs for residents will be in effect until the Memorial Day weekend, when access typically reopens for the season to public vehicles. SEKI is planning to close the Generals Hwy at Hospital Rock Friday evening, 3/1. If the forecast is accurate, it is likely to remain closed through the weekend, especially given how low the snowline may be. Meanwhile, plans are in place to remove hazard trees and repair storm damaged roads, including General Highway and the Mineral King Road. For details, click on the title above!
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks provide information about the status of popular low-land trails in Sequoia National Park and their plans for repairing and maintaining trails, as well as the roads and parking lots providing access. The update includes information on the North Fork Trails, the South Fork Trails, Shepherd’s Saddle, and Oriole Lake.
Fire management staff are preparing to burn piles of cut vegetation in multiple locations throughout the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The work will be ongoing as conditions allow from January 22 through March 15, 2024. During the next couple of months visitors to the parks may see smoke, burning piles, firefighters, and firefighting equipment along the roadway. Specific timing for the work will be dependent upon environmental prescription parameters, air quality windows, and staffing levels.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are offering recommendations for the holiday season and information about policy changes. Recommendations include using the shuttle December 23–January 9 and making use of the park map and trip planner. Generals Highway between Sequoia and Kings Canyon will close on Monday, January 8 or when impassable due to snow. There will be no lodging available in the Parks January 7 to March 15. The Sycamore Fire showed no growth overnight. With more precise measurements of the fire, the acreage is now listed at 24 acres. The fire is currently staffed by 1 hand crew, 2 engines, and 1 helicopter. No further growth is anticipated. The fire will remain staffed through the upcoming predicted hot weather.
Good afternoon everyone, update on the Sycamore Fire. The fire is currently approximately 25 acres, and forward progress has been stopped. The east and west flanks of the fire have been secured with hose lays and fire retardant, and there is currently no threat to park facilities and housing or to the community of Three Rivers. The Generals Highway has been fully reopened in both directions.
There is a 5-acre fire west of the Ash Mountain Helibase near the entrance to Sequoia National Park. Tulare County, CALFIRE, and NPS fire resources are responding. There are currently no evacuations. The Ash Mountain Entrance Station in Three Rivers is closed to inbound traffic. The Generals Highway is open to outbound (downhill traffic) of people leaving the park. Numerous aircraft are expected to arrive on scene very soon. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. We will issue updates as information becomes available.
