The 560-acre Park Ridge prescribed burn near Grant Grove is scheduled to commence on June 23rd and last up to six days. Visitors to the area on ignition days should expect moderate smoke impacts and intermittent traffic delays. At night, smoke may be discernible in the parks’ lower elevations. The road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is now open and passable in both lanes of traffic after an emergency road repair was completed Tuesday evening. A sink hole near Stony Creek in the Sequoia National Forest had become visible in one lane of traffic on the Generals Highway with an undermined roadway across both lanes. The hole is temporarily repaired with gravel and work is planned to continue this week to permanently repair the roadway with asphalt. During the continued roadwork travelers can expect a single lane closure in the work area. Travelers are encouraged to drive cautiously and observe road work signs in the area. In the past week alone, two swift water rescues have already occurred at the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks entered stage 1 fire restrictions at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024. Stage 1 fire restrictions prohibit wood and charcoal fires, including wood burning stoves, at elevations of 3,000 feet and below. Firefighters plan to begin ignitions on the 2024 Ash Mountain Prescribed Burn in the foothills of Sequoia National Park on Sunday, June 2. Two days of ignitions are planned. This project consists of 19 acres of broadcast prescribed burning and an additional 20 acres of non-fire fuels reduction. Smoke impacts are expected to be localized and relatively brief. Contractors began implementing the Generals Highway Roadside Hazard Tree Removal project on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. This project, spans approximately 10.5 miles of the Generals Highway from the Redwood Mountain Overlook to Forest Route 15S03 and the Sequoia National Park boundary. Operations will be conducted from Monday to Friday and may lead to traffic delays of up to 30 minutes.
