On Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at 10 a.m., all road closures in Sequoia National Park due to the Coffeepot Fire will be lifted, allowing public access. Mineral King Road and its recreation areas, as well as the section of South Fork Road within Sequoia National Park, will reopen. Most trails accessed from these roads will also be available, except for the Lady Bug Trail, which will remain closed. Atwell Mill Campground will also reopen. As of midday Monday, 19 August, the Cofeepot Fire had officially reached 934.1 acres. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have updated their closures map to indicate the portion of South Fork Road and surrounding area that is closed until further notice due to the proximity of the Coffeepot Fire. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks provide information about the status of popular low-land trails in Sequoia National Park and their plans for repairing and maintaining trails, as well as the roads and parking lots providing access. The update includes information on the North Fork Trails, the South Fork Trails, Shepherd’s Saddle, and Oriole Lake.
Due to flood damage and landslides, the South Fork Road is closed in Sequoia National Park, as is the South Fork Campground. Hikers and day users are discouraged from exploring the area because of the hazards.
The bridge on South Fork Drive at Heidi Drive and the Baily Bridge on North Fork Drive at the post office have been re-opened for limited use. Please use this opportunity to either leave the area or gather additional supplies, such as food, water, medications, and fuel, as additional heavy precipitation is expected this weekend which may result in additional closure and/or damage to the bridges.
South Fork Bridge is impassible; crews are actively working at location.
