Road paving is expected to take place on the Mineral King Road from 6/25 through 6/28. Paving will require temporary closures Tuesday, 6/25 through Friday 6/28. The road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is now open and passable in both lanes of traffic after an emergency road repair was completed Tuesday evening. A sink hole near Stony Creek in the Sequoia National Forest had become visible in one lane of traffic on the Generals Highway with an undermined roadway across both lanes. The hole is temporarily repaired with gravel and work is planned to continue this week to permanently repair the roadway with asphalt. During the continued roadwork travelers can expect a single lane closure in the work area. Travelers are encouraged to drive cautiously and observe road work signs in the area. The road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is closed for emergency road repair. The hole is near a roadway area that was severely damaged during winter storms in 2023. Crews will attempt to make repairs tonight, but it is unclear whether the road will be reopened by tomorrow. Tentatively beginning April 15 through about May 10 significant weekday, daytime closures will go into effect between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest Museum. Similar road construction will be taking place along the Mineral King Road. Current estimate is for work to begin in late April and take about 8 weeks to complete. Road closures with scheduled pass throughs for residents will be in effect until the Memorial Day weekend, when access typically reopens for the season to public vehicles. SEKI is planning to close the Generals Hwy at Hospital Rock Friday evening, 3/1. If the forecast is accurate, it is likely to remain closed through the weekend, especially given how low the snowline may be. Meanwhile, plans are in place to remove hazard trees and repair storm damaged roads, including General Highway and the Mineral King Road. For details, click on the title above!
Our friends at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have provided another update on the storm recovery efforts. The Mineral King Road will not be open to public access this 2023 season, significant work is taking place on General’s Highway, pavement preservation work continues in Grant Grove, and shuttle service in Giant Forest remains suspended until further notice.
The Generals Highway between the Foothills and Giant Forest areas of Sequoia National Park will reopen to public travel on Saturday, July 1. Road construction is still underway along two sections of the highway, and traffic lights will be used to manage one-lane vehicle travel.
Our friends at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have provided another update on the storm recovery efforts. Access to Giant Forest from Hwy 198 in Three Rivers is expected to open July 1! They are assessing the Mineral King Road to determine what, if any, public access will be possible this summer and to develop guidelines for resident access.

Due to impacts from an ongoing winter storm, the Generals Highway is closed north of Hospital Rock. It is not possible to reach Giant Forest. The Generals Highway from the Wye to Quail Flat in Grant Grove is closed until further notice due to a new section of road with significant damage.
Public access to the Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, February 11. This reopening will provide access to the Giant Forest Museum, the General Sherman Tree, and Wolverton snowplay area.
It is looking like the park is on track to reopen public access to Giant Forest, Lower Sherman Tree, and Wolverton Snowplay Area on or about Saturday, February 11; however, everything needs to go smoothly to meet this date.
