Sand Bag Party!

March 9, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

It is time for a party. A sand bag party!

With the weather experts predicting heavy rain and rapid snow melt, sand bagging is advised for people and businesses along rivers, streams, and ditches, as well as those in low-lying areas.

With that in mind, we are making a lively event out of the occasion. Thanks to our fire fighters, we have ample bags and ample sand at Fire Station 14. We just need smiles, shovels, and pickup beds or car trunks to fill sand bags and get them to where they need to go.

Join the party!

Join fellow sand bag partiers at Fire Station 14 between 9am and noon on Thursday 9 March. The fire station is on the corner of the highway and South Fork Drive at 41412 S Fork Dr, Three Rivers, CA 9327. We will be helping our neighbors by filling sand bags and delivering them.

Pick up your bags

If you are able to fill your own bags and take them away, go to the fire station at any time. Or, you can schedule things strategically so as to pick up your bags at the party.

Get your bags delivered

If you are unable to fill bags, transport, or stack them, let us know! Volunteers will deliver the bags to you and help you stack them.

Where do you need sand bags?

Sand bags can be an effective barrier in front of doors, including garage doors and sliding glass doors.

Walls of sand bags can be used to divert water away from your driveways, doors, gardens, etc.

Sand bags can be used to raise the banks of flood-prone streams and ditches to help prevent overflow.

How do you fill sand bags?

Filling sand bags is a two-person job. One person holds the bag open, and the other shovel the sand in. It is important that the bags be no more than half filled.

Sand bags can be tied for transport, but the ties must be be removed before the bags are put in place.

How do you place sand bags?

  • If possible, lay a plastic sheet in between the building and the bags to control the flow and prevent water from seeping into doors. Some folk find it useful to tape the plastic to the garage doors or wall.
  • Fold the open top of the sand bag down (on the plastic if you have it) and rest the bag on its folded top.
  • Take care in stacking sand bags. It is important to place the bags with the folded top of the bag in the upstream or uphill direction to prevent the bags from opening when water runs by them.
  • Tamp each sand bag into place, completing each layer prior to starting the next layer.
  • Limit placement to three layers, unless a building is used as a backing or sand bags are placed in a pyramid.

How many sand bags do we need?

100 sandbags are needed to create a wall 1 foot high and 20 feet long. That’s a lot of bags!
