As the 4th of July holiday weekend approaches, we anticipate a significant increase in visitation to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Due to the high fire risk, ALL fireworks, including Safe and Sane Fireworks, are ILLEGAL in Three Rivers and the surrounding area, including the BLM lands (e.g., the Salt Creek and Case Mountain area) and Sequoia National Park. Atwell Mill Campground in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park will reopen on July 2, just in time for the 4th of July holiday weekend. Reservations will open the morning of June 27 at 7 a.m. Click the link above for details.
Highway 180 and Highway 63 are closed due to a growing fire incident. There is currently no access to the parks from the Fresno area. Highway 180 is closed from Cove Road to Dunlap Road. Highway 63 is closed at Orange Cove to the Highway 180 Junction. Park visitors are to be routed through Three Rivers. Click on the link above for more details.
Road paving is expected to take place on the Mineral King Road from 6/25 through 6/28. Paving will require temporary closures Tuesday, 6/25 through Friday 6/28. Road paving is also scheduled on site 20 on the Generals Highway on Monday, 6/24. Click the link above for a more detailed schedule. Also, please help us urge visitors to stay out and away from the river if they plan to come up to the parks. As you know, this week we had another tragic river incident.
Around 2 p.m. Friday, the body of a Tulare teen who fell into the Kaweah River and has been missing since Wednesday was recovered. The 17-year-old’s body was found about 1 1/2 miles from the area where she first went into the water. Click for more details and guidance on river safety.
On Thursday 13 June at 6pm, Eddie Valero and RMA hosted a public informational meeting at the Three Rivers Memorial Building to provide an update on the short term rental ordinance. The County launched webpage today that makes the information available to the general public. Meanwhile, we have made the documents that were handed out at the meeting available on the Three Rivers Together website. Click the link for more information.
The 560-acre Park Ridge prescribed burn near Grant Grove is scheduled to commence on June 23rd and last up to six days. Visitors to the area on ignition days should expect moderate smoke impacts and intermittent traffic delays. At night, smoke may be discernible in the parks’ lower elevations. A few trails that enter the burn area, including the Park Ridge Trail, will be closed during the burn. Click on the link above for more datails.
On 24 October 2023 at its 9am meeting, the Tulare County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to direct Resource Management Agency staff to bring back to the Board of Supervisors a proposed ordinance and associated regulatory program on short-term rentals within the jurisdiction of Tulare County. Cedar Grove will reopen to public access on June 10, 2024, marking the first time visitors can return since severe flooding during the winter of 2022-2023 that caused significant damage. For more details, click on the link above.
Due to the recent power outage and extreme heat, Tulare County will be distributing water from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Three Rivers Memorial Building at 43490 Sierra Drive. The building will be open to those who are still without power and need a place to cool down until 7:00 p.m. Note that the Three Rivers Branch Library is also a cooling center.
The road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is now open and passable in both lanes of traffic after an emergency road repair was completed Tuesday evening. A sink hole near Stony Creek in the Sequoia National Forest had become visible in one lane of traffic on the Generals Highway with an undermined roadway across both lanes. The hole is temporarily repaired with gravel and work is planned to continue this week to permanently repair the roadway with asphalt. During the continued roadwork travelers can expect a single lane closure in the work area. Travelers are encouraged to drive cautiously and observe road work signs in the area.
